Lecture Outline 5: Skeletal System
I. Osteology (bone histology)
A. Identify major functions of the skeletal system:
1. support/protection
2. calcium reservior
3. site of blood cell production
B. Describe general organization of the skeletal system:
1. 206 bones (adult), over 300 as an infant
2. Axial Skeleton (80 bones)
3. Appendicular Skeleton (126 bones)
4. Can classify bones according to shape;
a. Long bones; flat bones; irregular bones; sesamoid bones; wormian bones.
B. Be able to use proper anatomical terms describing bones:
1. diaphysis
2. epiphysis
3. metaphysis
4. epiphyseal plate
5. articular cartilage
6. periosteum & endosteum
7. compact & spongy bone
C. Identify the function of bone cells:
1. osteoprogenitor
2. osteoblast
3. osteocyte
4. osteoclast
D. Describe the major bone matrix components:
1. hydroxyapatite
2. collagen
E. Distinguish between yellow and red bone marrow: (functions & locations)
F. Describe the two major processes of bone formation:
1. endochondral (long bone formation)
2. intramembraneous (flat bone formation)
G. Describe the process of bone remodeling & repair:
1. cells involved
2. factors affecting bone remodeling
H. Describe the role of bone tissue and cells in calcium homeostasis:
1. Describe the effects of these hormones on bone tissue
a. parathyroid hormone
b. calcitonin
c. calcitriol (vitamin D)
d. estrogen
e. growth hormone
f. insulin
II. Skeleton (know all axial vs. appendicular bones):
III. Articulations:
