El Cajas National Park
The park averages 3500 meters (11,483 feet) in elevation and goes as high as 4000 meters (13,123 feet). There are over 200 lakes in this very unique geographical region called a páramo (a kind of high, bleak plateau). In reality, it is fascinating on a close-up scale. Few trees can grow at this elevation, but the clouds roll in by midday, bringing considerable moisture to the region and creating a favorable climate for the growth of lichens, succulents and a myriad of miniscule wild flowers. Because of the lack of landmarks like trees and frequent fog, it is very easy to become disoriented and lost while hiking in the area.
