New Man Myth
by Frank Jones
Break Point, California, is a town somewhere between the magnificent Big Sur coastline and the crowded Los Angeles county beaches. This is where Lancis Aloner calls home. Lancis moved here after graduating from Pepperdine University where he was an extremely shy person. His mother hoped that going away to a University would help him come out of his shell. Unfortunately, Lancis continued to be anti-social and didn't make a friend the whole time at Pepperdine. He did manage to surf up and down the California coastline, including Baja. This is how Lancis found Break Point. He stopped there to camp out one night and woke up to real nice waves. He instantly fell in love with this town.
Lancis found an apartment there that had a garage. He needed the garage because besides surfing, Lancis was a very good surfboard shaper. With the help of a nice trust fund set up by his late father, Lancis had all the time in the world to shape boards and surf. Recently something else had gotten Lancis's attention. One morning Lancis was walking down the beach and saw a girl walking to the surf. He had never seen a girl so beautiful in his life. She was perfect in every way. She even surfed! From that day on he couldn't get her out of his mind.
It was a perfect summer morning and Lancis was taking advantage of it. He was surfing his favorite spot in between 3rd and 4th street. There was nobody else out and it was glassy, just the way he liked it. He caught a few waves and then caught a real nice wave that made him paddle back out with a big smile. While waiting for the next wave, Lancis heard a ripple in the water. Lancis looked over and saw a seal. The seal kept swimming around him. Then all of a sudden Lancis heard his name. He looked around in confusion. Right then the seal jumped on the board that Lancis was sitting on and said, "Hi". Lancis fell off of his board in amazement. " Did you just say "hi", Lancis said to the seal still sitting on his board. " Yes, I did and I have more to say to you", the seal replied. " You have been chosen by the World Sea Council to save the California coast. The World Sea Council consists of representatives from all the oceans in the world. Of course, humans don't know that there is such a group." The seal went on to explain that there are three aliens that have landed in California. They are going up and down the coast contaminating surf spots and places of highly populated sea life. Lancis is the only person the council could pick because he possesses a power that goes into the boards he shapes. This power can kill the aliens and the contaminants they are putting in the ocean. Lancis interrupted and said, " you mean you want me to kill the aliens"? " Yes", said the seal. Lancis looked into the horizon for a moment, then asked, " what if I don't"? " Well the aliens will continue to contaminate the rest of the worlds oceans, you will never be able to surf again and the world will perish". "No pressure", the seal concluded. Lancis looked into the horizon again and mustered up all the courage that he never thought was possible for him and said, " yes". Lancis looked at the seal and asked him what he had to do.
The seal's instructions for him were to shape three surfboards and gather all the shavings from the boards. The shavings would be used to kill the aliens and get rid of the contaminates in the ocean. The boards will be used as individual funeral pyres for the aliens. Five handfuls of shavings must be used at each spot. The seal gave Lancis a list of all the spots that had been contaminated so far. Lancis would have to drive his truck to each spot and camp there. The aliens possessed a monitor that kept track of the places that were already contaminated. So when Lancis would decontaminate a spot, the monitor would inform the aliens. This would then cause the aliens to search for who is meddling in their business. Knowing all this, Lancis went home and shaped three boards, gathered the shavings and reluctantly started his mission.
Lancis was very successful on the first five spots. Unfortunately, Lancis was becoming increasingly afraid everyday. Not knowing when or how the aliens would attack, he journeyed to the next spot. The next spot was very secluded and the terrain was rough. This forced Lancis to camp farther away from the shore than the previous spots. This would turn out to be a good fate for Lancis. Upon returning from decontaminating the sixth spot, he was able to see from a distance that there were people at his camp. Fearing that it might be the aliens, he sneaked up as close as possible to the camp. His fears were right. It was the aliens! As the aliens went through his stuff, Lancis waited till all three of them had their backs to him. Then with his eyes blazing with confidence and courage that they have never shown before, Lancis pounced upon the aliens in a perfectly executed attack. The startled aliens turned around and were immediately covered in the remaining surfboard shavings. They stumbled around briefly, shrieking in agony as the shavings burned into their skin. They then collapsed to the ground in front of Lancis and died. Lancis immediately went to his truck and retrieved the three surfboards he shaped. Then he tied each alien to a surfboard, paddled each one out past the breakers and set them on fire. All three sank to the bottom of the ocean. The power that was in the shavings was also in the surfboards. So when the surfboards sank, they decontaminated the rest of the coast. Lancis then packed up camp and went back to Break Point feeling a little different.
When Lancis returned home, he brought back the courage and confidence to go after all the
things and people that he had let pass him by. This included having the courage to strike up a conversation with that same
beautiful girl he saw on the beach, right before he went on his mission. They became very good friends and soon after that
they were married. He also started to sell his surfboards and became one the most popular shapers in the world. Lancis
never saw the seal again. Lancis must have done a good job though. Lancis thinks this because the waves are never flat when
he goes surfing. THE END
