Many students wonder what the value of humanities
is in their lives, and the simple answer is that humanities gives you a
broader perspective on life and enriches your life with art, music, dance,
theatre, movies, etc. Life would be boring without the humanities. In a
fast-paced world, the humanities get you to slow down so you can reflect
on your experiences and the knowledge you acquire; this reflection is used
to question the way we do things and what we believe. The humanities are
a foundation for getting along in the world because you reflect on the
world and put events into some perspective, instead of just reacting to
events in your life. The goal of the humanities is to develop a passion
for ideas. The humanities remind us to learn from the past to make a better
future; to do that you must open up to your creative and passionate sides
and be willing to think about and commit yourself to what is important
to you. The humanities should affect you, change you, make you think, stir
your soul, give you insights, help you make connections, and lead you to
discovery. You should post your best examples of humanities to demonstrate
how you are meeting GateWay’s humanities outcomes. Examples of humanities
could include projects, journals or papers from a humanities class or any
project from any class that shows your involvement with global issues,
multicultural issues, gender issues, ethical issues, life-long learning
issues, and social issues.
