Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is disciplined thought that applies specific criteria in the evaluation of ideas and conclusions. It is a process that enables us to make responsible and logical choices in all areas of our lives. This process is essential to become self-directed in our thinking and to use the self-correcting application of intellectual standards to that thinking (see below). In other words, critical thinkers do not simply respond to everything they are exposed to; they think through their options and make conscious choices. It is often assumed that all thinking that is supported with reasons is critical thinking. However, the test of critical thinking is how good and sufficient those reasons are. Not all opinions are equal! Effective critical thinkers direct their thoughts rather than being controlled by them; they withhold judgment until they examine all aspects of an issue.

You should post your best examples of critical thinking to demonstrate how you are meeting GateWay’s critical thinking outcomes. Examples of critical thinking could include journal entries to readings, essays in response to some reading, and critical thinking assignments done for a class.
