Lecture Outline 4: Integument
I. Integumentary System:
A. Located, identify the three major regions of skin
1. epidermis (outer epithelial layers)
2. dermis (middle connective tissue region)
3. subcutaneous (hypodermis) (deeper adipose region)
B. Locate, identify and describe the epidermal strata in skin
1. stratum corneum (outermost portion - keratinized)
2. stratum spinosum
3. stratum lucidum (only on palms & soles)
4. stratum granulosum
5. stratum basale (also called germinativum - highest mitotic activity)
C. Identify these integumentary cells and structures (know the functions of each)
1. keratinocytes,
2. melanocytes,
3. adipocytes,
4. fibroblasts,
5. merkle cells,
6. pacinian corpuscles,
7. arrector pili,
8. sebaceous glands,
a. differentiate "eccrine" from "apocrine" sweat glands.
9. sudoriferous glands,
10. papillary region,
11. reticular region,
D. Describe the following forms of skin cancer
(Skin
cancer introduction; Resources
list; )
1. basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
2. squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)
3. malignant melanoma
4. identify the ABCDs of examining skin cancer lesions
a. A- assymeteric shape
b. B- border that is irregular or diffuse
c. C- color that is pearly or multicolored
d. D- diameter larger than 5mm
E. Describe the characteristics of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns
1. be able to use the "Rule of Nines" to estimate body surface area involved in burns
