BIO201 Anatomy & Physiology
Lecture Outline 2: Biology Review
(The following is review material from the Biology prerequisite courses... I will assume you understand this and will only briefly cover it in lecture).
I. Chemistry Basics:
A. General chemistry terms:
1. atom, proton, neutron, electron, ion, chemical bonds.
2. What is "molecule"? What "holds" atoms together in molecules?
3. How are electrons important in chemical bonds? What role do they play?
4. What is an ion? How are they formed?
B. Acid/base terminology and the pH scale
1. What is an "acid", "base" and "buffer"?
2. What are neutral, acidic, alkaline pH levels?
3. What is the pH of blood?
(Acid/base tutorial lesssons)
II. Biochemistry Basics:
A. Structure, properties, functions and examples of cellular macromolecules:
1. Proteins -
2. Carbohydrates -
3. Lipids -
4. Nucleic acids -
III. Cell Biology:
A. Identify the "basic unit of living organisms"
B. Plasma membranes
1. describe structure & characteristics - especially phospholipid structure and properties
2. distinguish between "hydrophilic" and "hydrophobic"
3. identify the term "electrochemical gradient"
4. state several factors affecting membrane permeability
5. describe various type of movement/transport of molecules across membrane
a. diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport,
b. phagocytosis vs. pinocytosis
(see phagocytosis in action)
6. describe osmosis and factors affecting it (focus on hypo-, iso- and hypertonic solutions)
B. Major organelles - Know major functions of each: (very basic cell organelle review)
|
1. nucleus
2. ribosomes 3. RER and SER 4. mitochondria 5. Golgi |
6. lysosomes
7. peroxisomes 8. cytoskeleton 9. centrioles 10. cytoplasm and cytosol |
