Lecture Outline 1: Introduction
I. Structural organization of human body:
A. Identify the six levels of organization of the body
B. Identify several major characteristics of living organisms
C. Distinguish between metabolism and homeostasis
D. Define homeostasis and describe its importance in living organisms
E. Compare neural vs. endocrine system responses and their general characteristics
F. Describe and compare feedback loops - positive vs. negative with examples
G. Identify the three components of homeostatic control mechanisms & their roles
II. Anatomical directions and orientation:
A. Be able to describe locations of major body structures with proper directional terminology
1. superior(cephalic or cranial)/inferior(caudal)
2. anterior(ventral)/posterior(dorsal)
3. lateral/medial(mesial)
4. contralateral/ipsilateral
5. proximal/distal
6. superficial/deep
B. Be able to locate and identify the major body cavities & structures
1. cranial cavity
2. vertebral cavity
3. thoracic cavity
a. diaphragm
b. pleural cavity
c. pericardial cavity
d. mediastinum
4. abdominal cavity
5. serous membranes
a. distinguish between visceral and parietal membranes
C. Be able to locate and identify the major abdominopelvic regions
1. R/L hypochondriac regions
2. epigastric/hypogastric regions
3. R/L lumbar regions
4. R/L iliac(inguinal) regions
5. umbilical region
D. Define: radiography, CT, PET, MRI and ultrasound
