Histology Review - Areolar CT

AREOLAR connective tissue magnified 400X.

Fibroblasts with dark nuclei [A] are seen here along with thick collagen fibers [B], thin elastic fibers [C] and very fine reticular fibers [D].

Although not seen in this view, mast cells are common granular-looking cells in this tissue that trigger inflammation when activated by injury, infection, toxins or hypersensitive allergic reactions.

The ground substance of this tissue appears in small open areas (hence the name "AREOLAR") that are light in this view and holds large amounts of interstitial body fluids.
